LIVING WITH ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION?

PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPY IS WHAT YOU’VE
BEEN LOOKING FOR

Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to attain or sustain an erection due to a variety of reasons. One of the common underlying causes of erectile dysfunction is poor blood flow to the penis which can be a result of aging or disease or surgery.

It can affect healthy men just like you and put them on the path of frustration, stress, and struggle and performance anxiety. And because it’s such a sensitive topic, it keeps you from openly talking about it and asking for help.

DON’T BE ASHAMED! IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!

According to Healthline, 52% of men have experienced some type of Erectile Dysfunction in the course of their lives. Fifty-Two Percent! That’s no small number.

But most men struggling with Erectile Dysfunction problems operate from a mindset that keeps them silent and anxious. They feel embarrassed about talking about the problem and prefer to ignore it. They hope it goes away by itself. They lose confidence in themselves and start worrying.

All these feelings lead to performance anxiety and can really impact your sexual health.

Most men resource to erectile dysfunction pills and erectile dysfunction drugs. But that’s not really treating the problem is it?

Does that sound like you too? It’s okay… You didn’t know there were more options…UNTIL NOW!

SAY “BYE-BYE” TO PERFORMANCE ANXIETY WITH SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Shockwave Therapy is a very successful, non-invasive tool that pelvic floor physiotherapists can use to treat erectile dysfunctions. One that helps men just like you overcome Erectile Dysfunction, re-gain confidence and reduce stress and performance anxiety.

Shockwave Therapy uses a handheld device to deliver low -frequency, acoustic shockwaves (not electrical shocks) to the base and shaft of the penis. The shockwaves break down any restrictions in the tissue, stimulate new blood vessels to grow in the area and therefore improve blood flow and quality of erections.

How do you treat Erectile Dysfunction?

Looking at the underlying cause is the start, and a multiple treatment process like using medications and talk therapy are helpful. There are erectile dysfunction drugs available over the counter. However, please consult your doctor before buying and using.

All medications come with side effects, so it is important to consult with your doctor before starting.

Testosterone therapy, talk therapy, and Vacuum Pump treatments are all used in conjunction with medications. Talk therapy is used around the possible psychological aspect of ED. These can include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety /Performance Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Vacuum Pump treatments is the process of using a plastic tube that is placed on the penis to draw blood, thus stimulating an erection.

What are natural home methods to help cure Erectile Dysfunction?

With all this being said there are also natural based remedies to help treat ED. Different herbs and supplements have been linked in helping to cure ED in some cases. Both these can be purchased at your local grocery store or health food store. Look for the following:

  • Asparagus racemosus
  • Ginseng (Korean red ginseng)
  • L-arginine
  • L-carnitine

These along with many others are available. However, just like medications you should consult your doctor about certain side effects that can be linked to herbs and supplements as well.

Acupuncture and Massage (Prostatic massage) can be very helpful as well.

How do you prevent Erectile Dysfunction?

Before addressing the treatment aspect of ED, you can also look at ways to help prevent it. The steps to prevention can be done at home to make the process more comfortable for you and your partner to help access a long-term cure.

  • Keep heart conditions and diabetes under control. These can be directly linked to the cause of ED.
  • Regular exercise
  • Staying within a healthy weight
  • Starting a healthier diet
  • Work on reducing stress and anxiety
  • No smoking

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate gland found in males and is one of the largest and most common form of cancer for this population. The causes can list anywhere from ethnic background, natural aging process, excessive weight gain, and lack of exercise. Although there is no proven strategy to help prevent there are ways to check.

How do I check?

The first being the most accurate, involves a tissue sample being taken from the prostate that undergoes a full examination. Others can include; frequent urination (especially at night), blood in your urine, pain/burning during urination, and a sudden new onset of erectile dysfunction.  By booking regular appointments with your doctor and following the ways for erectile dysfunction prevention, you have a greater chance in maintaining a healthy life.

What is incontinence?

Another major factor to ED can be incontinence; i.e., the sudden urge to urinate. This can usually be overlooked when dealing with erectile dysfunction. Incontinence can be separated into 4 major types.

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Stress incontinence
  • Overflow incontinence
  • Overactive bladder and functional incontinence

The causes of any one of these types can be:

  • Weak/overactive bladder muscles
  • Weak pelvic floor muscles
  • Enlarged prostate in men which can cause a blockage
  • Long term nerve damage from disease that affect the bladder
What is Pelvic floor Physiotherapy?

Most seem to be familiar with the main causes, but one may seem to stand out from the rest. This would be the Pelvic Floor and the different muscles that pertain to it.

Does everyone have it?

Your pelvic floor can be found in both men and women. The main treatment to assist in strengthening this area is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy and Shockwave Therapy. Pelvic Floor therapy is a specialized and is used to rehabilitate, recondition and strengthen your pelvic floor. The therapist can help provide both pelvic floor exercises for men, and for women for home use. Pelvic floor physiotherapists can be found throughout the GTA, such as Toronto, Oakville etc.

Shockwave FAQ

Does Shockwave Therapy hurt?

Most men tolerate the treatment very well. The sensation is like “small elastics hitting you”. If the skin is very sensitive, some men choose to put a numbing cream before the treatment.

Who provides the Shockwave treatments?

The treatment is provided by Registered Physiotherapists who have taken extensive postgraduate training in pelvic health and have studied the GainsWave protocol for ED.

How long does each treatment take?

We schedule 30mins appointments and in that time, we review and progress your pelvic floor exercises and provide the shockwave treatment. Shockwave treatment is 15 to 20 minutes long.

How many treatments do I need?

This is specific to each patient but generally 6-8 treatments have shown to be effective.

Is a referral required?

A doctor’s note is not needed to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist. However, we do recommend that you see your doctor if you notice any changes to your bladder, bowel, and sexual health.

Will the treatments be covered by my Insurance Company?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is eligible for insurance coverage under physiotherapy and we provide direct billing for most insurance companies.

What does research say?

There is high-level research evidence showing that pelvic floor physiotherapy yields good prognosis when utilized prior to prostate surgery and at onset of any bladder and sexual dysfunction.

Recent study published in BMC Urology in 2019 showed that:

A pelvic floor muscle exercise program commenced prior to prostate surgery enhanced post-surgical measures of pelvic floor muscle function, reduced incontinence and improved quality of life.

The Early Use of Vacuum Therapy for Penile Rehabilitation After Radical Prostatectomy: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis published in American Journal of Men’s Health in 2018 showed that early use of vacuum therapy appears to have excellent therapeutic effect on post radical prostatectomy patients and no serious side effects were identified

Can low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy improve erectile dysfunction? A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study Anne B. Olsen, Marie Persiani, Sidsel Boie, Milad Hanna and Lars Lund published in 2014 in Scandinavian Journal of Urology showed that shockwave therapy does yield positive results in men with ED and further long term studies need to be conducted.
