Acupuncture treatments are provided by registered health care professionals and it is within the scope of Physiotherapy.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of disposable fine needles below the skin into specific acupuncture points. The goal of treatment is to alleviate pain and to restore balance within the body. This is achieved by stimulating specific acupuncture points which result in the release of neurotransmitters that help reduce pain, inflammation and muscle spasms.
Treatment sessions are usually between 15 to 20 minutes and the relief could be immediate or occur within a few hours. Treatment is usually pain free but it is common for patients to experience some heaviness/aching and/or numbness around the inserted needles. Acupuncture can be provided in conjunction with other treatments such as physiotherapy, massage therapy and chiropractic.
